Miss Collins } Victoria Kansas Newborn Photographer

My heart is so full sharing this beautiful family’s session on my blog today. Miss Collins is absolutely perfect and she is so very loved. I made the switch last year to only offer in-home newborn photography and it has been the best decision ever. There is just something about those quiet moments when a family is still getting to know each other and falling more in love every minute that I really love to watch and photograph. Little things like the picture you will see a new daddy, holding his beautiful new baby girl, while his wife and the mother of his child watches on. Little moments like that are what mean the most to me. I could go on and on about this sweet newborn session but I am just going to stop and let you see for yourself. I hope you enjoy!

I also have to wish this beautiful family a very happy anniversary! Their wedding was just a year ago and if you didn’t get to view their pictures, I highly recommend you visit this blog post and see it. It was completely inspired and I still can’t believe it has been a year!

Boy Moms | Tips for Gorgeous Family Photos with Your Boys

April 26, 2016 Family Photography

This is what family pictures are all about. Lots of love and laughs. Fun. We had a great time (or at least I did). Natural smiles and we created some gorgeous pictures and I think some pretty beautiful memories. LuJeana is one of the most awesome “Boy Moms” I have met. She let the boys have a voice in their outfits. She embraced the fact that, boys will be boys, and brought a football along to keep them busy while we were taking individual pictures and it made for some great candid shots. She came with only a couple requests, a great family picture, and a few shots at sunset. We were able to burn off some energy playing ball at the start of their session and then finished with a few epic sunset pictures. I am so excited to share these with you and I hope you love them as much as I do. These sure were fun to take!

Here are a few tips for taking pictures with a group of boys (or just kids).

  1. Make sure everyone has had a snack. Hungry kids will most likely whine. At least mine will.
  2. Let them have a voice in their outfit choice! I know you want them to look perfect, but it’s equally important that they are comfortable and feel good in their clothes as well. It’s hard to smile when your shirt is itchy or your pants do not fit right.  Let the kids be involved in their outfit choice.
  3. Allow some time for the candid and natural shots to appear. You can lead a child to a photographer but you can’t make him/her smile. Give it some time. I have a method to my sessions and I know it can seem frustrating when a child doesn’t want to smile or do what you want them to do. We will work together though to get it right and often that in between time, is where we build trust and get real, honest expressions from your family.
  4. Do communicate your photo goals with your photographer. I do want to know if you have something specific in mind. Like the sunset shots for example. Those pictures have to be timed just right, and they require a specific setup that I often do not use for family pictures. I need to know ahead of time that you want that shot. I also need to know what style you like. I am a very natural artist. I take great care in editing my photos, but I do not like to photoshop the image until it is completely surreal. That’s just my taste and style. If you get to know me, you will know I am pretty down to earth and that’s the way I like my photography too.
  5. Feel free to bring along something your kids like and will keep them entertained. The football here kept the boys busy while I was doing individual pictures. It made for some great candids. It also gave me a bribe as I could steal it and they don’t get it back until they cooperate for a picture with mom. You see where I’m going with this? It is great leverage for a session.

I hope you enjoyed this peek at an awesome family portrait session! Please reach out and say hello if you are interested in booking a session of your own!

A Day in the Life Session

February 29, 2016 Family Photography, Personal

I have been wanting to do an On the Hour (photo an hour) or Documentary Session of my own kids for quite some time. It is really hard though to focus on taking pictures when there are so many other things that have to get done. Things like dishes, laundry, chores, homework and reading, cooking and juggling business as well. Sunday, I forced myself to just keep my camera by my side and do it. I couldn’t be happier that I finally did this. So many little ordinary things that made up a pretty beautiful collection of pictures. I hope you enjoy this little peek at our everyday. _MG_6333_MG_6356

I am now booking 2016 Documentary Sessions. I believe every day is an extraordinary gift and years later we will treasure those little everyday moments. Sessions are completely natural, no matching outfits required and no formal posing allowed. Email me at kelsey@stremelphotography.com and we can visit about your family and how I can help you document your families story.

The S Family A Family Family Lifestyle Session

I love how this session came together! I am not sure if it’s the bright colors or just the big beautiful smiles. Everything was perfect! When I say it was perfect, I mean I love these pictures. The colors, the smiles, the snuggles. They are just what I wanted to capture and how I wanted to show the S family. We had the same hiccups with their session as every session. Kids needed noses wiped. Babies tipped over while sitting and needed a cuddle. Shy girls had to be talked into giggling and smiling. Dad may have been begging to be done before we started. These things are all part of the game. The S family knows how to roll with it though, and we created some beautiful pictures that perfectly captured their carefree spirit. It is always such a joy to see their family!

Let’s Take a Nap in the Tall Grass } A Summer Family Session

“Creek goes rippling by
I’ve been barefoot and all day with my baby
Brown leaves have started falling
Leading the way

I like it best just like this
Doing nothing all the way
So let’s lay down in the tall grass
Dreaming away

And all I wanna do is let it be and be with you
And watch the wind blow by
And all I wanna see is you and me go on forever
Like the clear blue sky
Slowly, there’s only
You and I
And all I want to do is watch the wind blow by…”

I could not get this song out of my head while editing this beautiful session of the Herres family. It was just so warm, and sweet, and perfectly summer. We had everything you could wish for on an afternoon family picture session. Warm sunny skies, a breeze to keep us cool, laughs and the prettiest smiles.
